What is DoD Option C Life Insurance?
DoD Option C is a voluntary term life insurance program offered to active‑duty service members, reservists, and retirees. It provides supplemental coverage beyond the basic Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and can be purchased in increments of $10,000 up to $500,000.

Eligibility and Enrollment
Any eligible service member who already has SGLI can add Option C. Enrollment is open during the annual Open Season, but service members may also enroll or make changes during a qualifying life event such as marriage, birth of a child, or deployment. Retirees who have SGLI at the time of retirement can continue Option C coverage for up to 30 years, provided premiums are paid.
Coverage Features
Option C is a term policy that pays a lump‑sum death benefit to designated beneficiaries if the insured dies while the policy is in force. The coverage does not accrue cash value and ends when the term expires or premiums lapse. Beneficiaries receive the full amount selected at enrollment, regardless of the cause of death, except for suicide within the first two years.
Cost Structure
Premiums are based on the insured's age at the time of enrollment, the amount of coverage selected, and whether the policy is purchased as a single‑life or joint‑life (spouse) plan. Rates increase each year after age 45 and are higher for older enrollees. Because the policy is term, premiums remain level for the chosen term length but rise if coverage is increased later.

How to Apply
Apply through the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) portal or your branch's personnel office. You'll need your service number, current SGLI policy details, and the desired coverage amount. After submission, the system calculates the premium and provides a confirmation. Payments are deducted from your pay‑grade or can be billed directly.
