Fixing a Separated Shower Drain on a Slab Foundation

Identify the problem

Locate the gap where the drain pipe has detached from the shower pan; this usually shows as water pooling or a loose pipe at the floor level.

Gather tools and materials

You'll need a pipe wrench, plumber's putty, PVC or ABS pipe and fittings, a rubber gasket, silicone sealant, a drill with masonry bits, and a concrete repair mix.

Detach the faulty section

Turn off the water supply, then unscrew the drain pipe from the trap using the wrench. Remove any broken or cracked pipe sections, cleaning the pipe ends and the pan's drain opening.

Prepare the slab and pan

Clear debris from the slab around the drain opening. If the concrete around the pipe is cracked, mix and apply concrete repair to create a smooth, level surface for the new fitting.

Install a new drain assembly

Fit a rubber gasket onto the drain opening of the shower pan, then insert the new pipe segment, ensuring it sits flush. Apply plumber's putty around the joint and tighten the connection with the wrench. Seal the exterior joint with silicone to prevent leaks.

Test and finish

Restore water flow and run the shower, checking for any drips at the repaired joint. Once dry, apply a final bead of silicone around the pipe where it meets the slab for extra waterproofing.
