Do You Ever Get Your Whole Life Insurance Monthly Premium Back?

With most whole life insurance policies, you do not get your monthly premium back after the insured person dies. The premiums pay for the death benefit, the insurer's costs, and a savings component called cash value. If the policy is surrendered while the insured is alive, you may receive some money, but it is rarely a full return of every premium paid.

Where Your Premium Money Actually Goes

Each monthly premium is split between three areas. The cost of insurance covers the insurer's risk. Administrative fees and commissions are deducted. The remainder goes into the cash value account, which grows on a tax-deferred basis. Because of these deductions, the early years of a policy build cash value slowly, and the total paid in premiums usually exceeds the guaranteed cash value for many years.

When You Might Get Money Back

There are a few situations where a return is possible. If you surrender the policy, you receive the cash value minus any surrender charges. Some policies offer a return of premium rider, which refunds a portion of the premiums paid if the insured outlives the term. In rare cases, a paid-up policy can be converted so that no further premiums are due, but the death benefit is reduced. These riders and options vary by insurer and contract.

Is a Refund of Premiums Worth It?

A return of premium feature increases the cost of the policy. You pay more each month for the chance to get money back if you live past a certain period. This is different from term life insurance with a premium refund. Whole life is designed for lifetime coverage, not for getting premiums back. If getting your money back is the priority, a term policy with a rider or a different savings vehicle may be more suitable.
