Core Property & Casualty License
The foundational license is the Arizona P&C license, which covers personal lines (auto, homeowners) and commercial lines. Applicants must submit an application through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), pass the state exam, and meet background and fingerprinting requirements.
Line-Specific Endorsements
While the P&C license authorizes most lines, agents often add endorsements for:
- Auto Insurance – included under personal lines of the P&C license.
- Homeowners Insurance – also covered by the personal lines portion of the P&C license.
- Commercial Property & Casualty – may require a separate commercial lines endorsement if the agency sells complex business policies.
Appointment with an Insurer
After licensing, agents must be formally appointed by each insurance carrier they wish to represent. The appointment process involves a carrier contract and filing the appointment with the Arizona Department of Insurance.
Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
Arizona mandates 24 hours of CE every two years for P&C license holders, including at least 3 hours of ethics. CE must be completed through approved providers and reported via NMLS.
Optional Certifications
Though not required, many agents pursue industry certifications to demonstrate expertise, such as:
- Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
